Dial is a wall lamp with the dimmer built into the fixture: a knob you turn by hand, right where the light is, instead of a switch somewhere across the room. It is the sort of detail that sounds minor in a description and turns out to be the thing you appreciate every single evening. The knob itself is satisfying to use as an object, which counts for more than it should.

Most dimmable wall lights depend on a wall dimmer having been installed in the right place, which in an older flat it almost never has. This one does not: the knob sits on the fixture itself, so you can take the light from full brightness for reading down to a low glow for winding down without getting up, and without an electrician being involved at any stage. That is the difference between a light that gets dimmed and one that stays on full until somebody switches it off entirely.

The output goes up and down the wall rather than out into the room, so it stays comfortable at eye level. Gold warms the stretch of wall around it; black draws a firmer, more graphic outline against pale plaster.
