There are four shade shapes. The cigar is the long tapered original and the most obviously mid-century of the set, and it is the one to choose if the reference is the point. The oval is rounder and softer, which suits a bedroom better than a living room. The lantern is more upright and structured, and reads as the most formal. The ball is the most contemporary of the four and the easiest to place in a room that is otherwise modern, since it carries the least period baggage with it.
Silk diffuses the bulb into a genuinely warm glow rather than a filtered white one, and the pull chain puts the switch within reach of a pillow. The arm is fully adjustable and the fitting is dimmable, so the same lamp covers both a page late at night and a whole evening of low light.
