Cage is an industrial plug-in wall sconce built around a metal cage over an exposed bulb: the detail that gives the style its name and most of its character. Everything else about the fitting is deliberately secondary to that cage, which is exactly how it should be when a single element is carrying the whole design.
The cage does two jobs at once. It protects the bulb, which genuinely matters on a fixture mounted somewhere people pass at close range with bags and elbows, and it throws a pattern of shadow lines across the wall and the ceiling whenever the light is on. That shifting geometry is the reason caged fixtures look interesting rather than merely utilitarian, and it is why they have outlived every other industrial-revival fitting from the same period. A bare bulb on a bracket gives you none of that.
The arm on it is adjustable, so the light can be aimed exactly where it is wanted rather than left facing wherever the bracket happens to point, and there is a dimmer on the cord for setting the level by hand. It plugs into a standard wall socket, which means no wiring, no electrician and nothing permanent left behind on the plaster.
