Stem is a modern pendant light reduced to its narrowest useful form: ten centimetres across, thirty-six centimetres tall, a slender metal tube and nothing else attached to it. There is no shade to speak of and no ornament at all. What remains is a line and the light that comes out of the bottom of it. In a kitchen that is often precisely enough.
The slim profile is what makes the fixture work over an island or a bar, because you can hang three or four in a row without them visually crowding the counter or blocking the view across the room to whoever is on the other side. The tall body also directs light downward in a tight column rather than spilling it sideways, which gives genuine task lighting on the surface below instead of a vague diffuse wash that leaves you working in your own shadow.
White keeps the fitting quiet against a pale ceiling and lets a row of them read as a rhythm rather than as a line of separate objects. Black draws a firm graphic line down from the ceiling and suits a kitchen that already has dark joinery, black window frames or metal detailing somewhere in it.
