The Copper Does All The Decorating

Form Straight Out Of Function

A Warm Reddish Glow Overhead

Penny is a copper pendant light named for the warm reddish glow of the metal itself, a Bauhaus fixture in which the material does all of the decorating and nothing else is asked to. There is no pattern, no moulding and no applied finish. The copper is simply left alone to be copper. That is a considerably harder thing to design well than it looks from underneath.

The design follows the Bauhaus rule that form should come from function: a plain glass shade, a copper collar, a straight drop, and nothing else added on top. That restraint is why the style has outlived every passing trend since the 1920s, and why this particular lamp sits as comfortably in a new-build flat as it does against older plasterwork in a Victorian hallway. Copper also does something metal finishes rarely do, which is improve with age as it darkens and deepens over the years.

The glass shade keeps the bulb visible from below, so choose a filament bulb that is worth looking at every day. Hang one over a small table, or a row of three along an island where the copper collars line up in a row and catch the light together from across the room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the copper coated?

No applied finish or pattern. The metal is left as copper, which is the whole point of the design.

Will the copper change over time?

Copper deepens with age, which most owners consider the best part. It looks more settled after a couple of years than on day one.

What shade does it use?

A plain glass shade held by the copper collar, so the metal frames the light rather than hiding it.

Does it suit a modern kitchen?

Yes. Copper pairs naturally with wood, white and matte black, and the Bauhaus form keeps it from looking rustic.

Can I hang several?

A row over an island works well, and copper repeated along a line reads as warm rather than heavy.
