Lumenorth Lustre Copper & Glass Sconce

Lustre is a post-modern wall sconce in copper and glass: warm metal set against a clear shade, with exactly the sheen the name suggests. The two materials are doing different jobs, the copper supplying warmth and the glass supplying depth, and neither is asked to imitate the other. It is a simple pairing of two materials, carried out with some care.

The body is genuine copper rather than a plated imitation, and that matters for two separate reasons. It holds its warmth of colour instead of wearing thin at the edges where hands and sleeves touch it, and it develops a subtle character over the years rather than simply looking older and tireder the way a plated finish does. Paired with glass, it gives the fixture visible depth, something to look at from close range as well as from across the room, which is worth having on a fitting mounted at eye level.

Copper darkens gradually, so the sconce you have in five years will not be quite the one you unpacked. Mount it beside a bed, in a hallway, or above a sideboard where the metal has something warm nearby to pick up and reflect back into the room.
