  • Motion Sensor Lighting Indoors: Where It Helps and Where It Irritates

    There is a simple test for whether a room should have a motion sensor light: would you rather not touch a switch there, and do you leave again within a few minutes? Wardrobes, cupboards, landings, cloakrooms and stair bottoms all pass. Living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens where you cook for an hour all fail, and fail badly, because a sensor that cannot see you sitting still will switch off in the middle of what you are doing.

    The rule: motion, not occupancy

    Almost every affordable sensor is a passive infrared detector. It does not see people, it sees changes in heat across its field of view. Someone walking past is an obvious change. Someone reading in an armchair is not, which is why the light goes off and you have to wave.

    Once you know that, the placement rule writes itself. Use sensors where people move through, and switches where people settle.

    Where they earn their place

    Inside a wardrobe or a cupboard, a sensor light is close to perfect. The door opens, the heat signature changes, the light comes on, and there was never a sensible place to put a switch anyway. The same logic applies to a pantry, an understairs cupboard and a utility room.

    The other clear winner is the night route: bedroom door to bathroom, or the bottom of a staircase. Here the value is not convenience but avoiding the full ceiling light at three in the morning.     Where they are a mistake

    Do not put a sensor on the main light of a room where people sit. Reading, working at a desk, watching a film and eating a long dinner all involve too little movement, and the light will cut out at the worst moment every time.

    Be careful in an open plan space too. A sensor at one end of a large room will be triggered by someone crossing the far end, which means the light comes on when nobody needs it.

    The three settings that decide whether you keep it

    Delay. This is how long the light stays on after the last movement. Fifteen to thirty seconds suits a cupboard. Sixty to ninety seconds suits a hallway or a stair. Anything under fifteen seconds is maddening.

    Detection angle and range. A 120 degree sensor with a three metre range covers a wardrobe or a corridor properly. A narrow sensor aimed across a wide space will miss you as you approach from the side.

    Light level threshold. Most decent sensors have a daylight cutoff, so the light does not trigger when the room is already bright. Without it you will run down a battery lighting a sunlit hallway all day.

    Height and aim

    Mount a sensor fixture where its field of view covers the approach rather than the destination. In a corridor that means facing along the corridor, not across it. Roughly 100 to 150 cm from the floor works for most indoor units, high enough to see a person, low enough not to be triggered by a door swinging above it.

    A common mistake is mounting a sensor light directly above the place you want lit. By the time you are under it, you have already crossed the dark stretch.

    Use warm light and low output at night

    A night route light should be warm, ideally 2200 to 2700 kelvin, and dim. One hundred to two hundred lumens is enough to see the floor and the stair edges.     Why does my motion sensor light keep switching off?

    Because passive infrared sensors detect movement rather than presence. If you are sitting still, the sensor sees no change and the delay runs out. Use a switched light in rooms where people stay still.

    What delay setting should I use?

    Fifteen to thirty seconds in a cupboard or wardrobe, sixty to ninety seconds in a hallway or on a stair. Longer delays drain batteries faster on cordless models.

    Do motion sensor lights work in the dark?

    Yes. Infrared detection does not need visible light. Most units also have a daylight threshold so they only trigger when the room is already dim.

    Are sensor lights good for a bathroom?

    For a route light at night, yes. As the main bathroom light, no, because a bath is precisely the situation where you stop moving.

    Can pets trigger a motion sensor light?

    They can, since a pet is a moving heat source. Mounting the sensor higher and angling it slightly upward reduces the number of false triggers.
