Warm White or Cool White? Colour Temperature Room by Room
Two bulbs of identical brightness can make the same room feel completely different, and the difference is a number printed in small type on the box: the colour temperature, measured in kelvin. Get it wrong and a beautifully furnished room feels like a departure lounge. Get it right and an ordinary room feels considered.
What the kelvin number means
Lower numbers are warmer and more orange. Higher numbers are cooler and more blue. The scale is counterintuitive, because the warm end has the low numbers.
Useful reference points: candle flame around 1800 K, a traditional filament bulb 2400 to 2700 K, a warm LED 2700 K, neutral white 3500 to 4000 K, daylight 5000 to 6500 K.
For domestic lighting, almost everything should sit between 2200 and 3000 K. The higher numbers exist for offices, workshops and photography, and they get into homes mainly because people buy whatever the supermarket had.
Living rooms and bedrooms: 2200 to 2700 K
This is the range where a room feels like somewhere you relax. Warm light flatters skin, brings out the colour in wood and textiles, and matches what the human eye associates with evening.
In a bedroom, go to the warm end at 2200 to 2400 K, particularly for a bedside light. Blue rich light suppresses melatonin, and the last hour before sleep is the worst time to introduce it.
A detail worth knowing: warm light looks best at low brightness and slightly odd at high brightness, which is exactly how daylight behaves as the sun sets. If you dim a room, warmth suits it. This is why dim to warm bulbs, which drop from 2700 K toward 2000 K as they dim, feel so natural.
Kitchens: split the difference
A kitchen is two rooms in one. At the worktop you are handling knives and judging whether meat is cooked, and there 3000 to 3500 K gives you accurate colour and a crisp working surface. Over the table or island where people sit and eat, drop back to 2700 K.
Mixing temperatures within one room is fine as long as the zones are distinct. What does not work is two different temperatures lighting the same surface, which makes everything look slightly dirty.
Bathrooms: 2700 to 3000 K
Bathrooms are the room people most often over cool, usually with a 4000 K ceiling light that makes everyone look ill at seven in the morning. Use 2700 to 3000 K, and put the light beside the mirror rather than above it so it lights your face from the side.
If you need accurate colour for makeup or shaving, prioritise colour rendering over temperature. A 2700 K bulb with a CRI of 90 or above shows skin tone far better than a 4000 K bulb with a CRI of 80.
Where cool white actually belongs
Task surfaces where alertness and accuracy matter: a home office desk during working hours, a workbench, a laundry area, the inside of a deep cupboard. Even there, 3500 to 4000 K is enough. Above 5000 K belongs in a garage or a studio, not a living space.
There is a case for cool bright light in the morning in a dark Nordic winter, where the natural light does not arrive until long after you do. If that is your situation, put it on the ceiling of a room you pass through rather than in the room you settle in.
The one rule that matters most: be consistent
Mismatched colour temperature within a single sightline is more noticeable than any individual choice. One 4000 K bulb among four 2700 K ones will look faintly green and wrong, and most people cannot say why.
When a bulb fails, replace it with the same temperature rather than whatever is in the drawer. If you are starting from scratch, pick 2700 K as the house standard and deviate only where there is a specific reason.

Colour rendering index describes how accurately a light shows colour, on a scale to 100. Below 80, reds go flat and skin looks grey. Look for 90 or above in any room where you look at people, food or fabric. It is the specification that separates a good LED from a cheap one, and it costs very little more.
