Hallway and Staircase Lighting: How to Space Wall Lights in a Narrow Space
A hallway is the room you spend the least time in and notice the most. It is the first thing a visitor walks into and the last thing you see on the way to bed, and it is almost always lit by a single ceiling fixture that leaves the two ends in gloom. Wall lights solve this properly, but only if you space them correctly.
The interval: two to three metres apart
Space wall lights along a corridor between 2 and 3 metres apart, measured centre to centre. Closer than 2 metres in a domestic hallway starts to look like a hotel; further apart than 3 metres and you get bright spots separated by shadow, which makes the corridor feel shorter and choppier than it is.
Start by measuring the corridor and dividing rather than counting. A 6 metre hallway takes either two lights at 2 metre intervals with a metre of margin at each end, or three at 1.5 metre intervals if you want a brighter, more rhythmic effect. The margin at each end should be roughly half the interval so the run looks intentional.
Odd numbers usually look better than even, and if your corridor has a door, a turn or an opening, treat each stretch as its own run rather than forcing a single rhythm through the interruption.
The height: lower than you would use in a living room
In a corridor you are usually within half a metre of the wall, which means a sconce at normal living room height sits almost in your peripheral vision as you walk past. Drop it to 140 to 155 cm from the floor.
Just as important is the type of fixture. In a narrow space choose something that washes light up and down the wall rather than projecting it outward. A sconce with an open front throws glare across the corridor; one with a closed shade and open top and bottom grazes the wall and gives you brightness without a visible source. Project depth, and the corridor gets longer
There is a visual trick worth knowing. A corridor lit only along its length feels like a tunnel. Put one light, or one object lit by a light, at the far end and the eye travels there instead, and the space reads as a route to somewhere rather than a passage.
Anything works as the target: a framed picture with a sconce beside it, a console table with a small lamp, or simply the brightest fixture of the run placed at the end wall.
Staircases are a different problem
On a stair, lighting is not decoration. The job is to make the edge of every tread visible, because a step you cannot see is a step you can fall down.
That means light coming from the side or from above, never from below and never straight into the face of someone coming down. A light at the bottom of a staircase aimed upward flattens the treads into a single bright plane and hides exactly the edges you need to see.
The practical arrangement is a light at the top, a light at the bottom and one at any turn or landing. On a long straight flight, add one in the middle. Mount them on the wall beside the stair at 140 to 150 cm above the nose of the tread directly below, measuring from the stair rather than from the floor of the room, so the height follows the rise.
Night lighting: lower and dimmer than you think
The corridor lighting you want at two in the morning is not the corridor lighting you want at seven in the evening. A full brightness overhead light at night wakes you up properly and wakes up anyone whose bedroom door is open.
The simplest answer is a second, lower layer. One or two low mounted lights near floor level, or a motion sensor fixture that comes on at a low level, is enough to cross a corridor safely without shocking anyone awake. Wiring is not the obstacle it used to be
Most hallways have a single ceiling point and no wall wiring at all, which is why so many stay badly lit. Plug in sconces work if there is a socket, and battery models work when there is not. Battery fixtures are particularly well suited to corridors because a hallway light is on for short bursts rather than whole evenings, so a charge lasts a long time.
