Tether is a plug-in hanging light designed around the cord itself. A set of ceiling hooks lets you route the cable wherever you want, so the lamp does not have to hang directly beneath an existing ceiling point. It plugs into a socket rather than being wired in, which means no electrician and nothing that cannot be undone. For a rented flat that is the entire argument.
Most rooms put the ceiling rose in the middle and the bed, the sofa or the desk somewhere else entirely, and the usual answer is to accept badly placed light for as long as you live there. Two or four hooks let you run the cord across the ceiling and drop the lamp exactly where it is wanted: over a bedside table, above a reading chair, or diagonally across a room to land over a desk in the corner. The swag can be as neat or as deliberate as you like, and taken down it leaves only two small holes.
Set the drop so the shade sits just above eye level when you are seated. Keep the cord run clear of doors, curtain tracks and anything else that moves when you are planning where the hooks should go.
