The form has not been fiddled with. It did not need to be.
Wider shades spread light further and more evenly, which is precisely why the classic factory dome has never gone away despite a century of alternatives. At thirty-six centimetres, Mill throws a generous pool of warm light across a dining table or a kitchen island without leaving the edges of the surface in shadow the way a narrow shade does. The inside of the dome reflects the output back down rather than letting it escape sideways, so almost everything the bulb produces lands where it is useful.
It takes an E26 lamp and hangs from a standard ceiling point. Use one over a round table, or a pair across a longer island, and leave enough drop that the rim of the dome sits comfortably above seated eye level rather than directly in it.
