Meridian throws light along a single vertical axis, up and down from the same fixture, dividing the wall vertically the way a meridian divides a map. The name is not accidental, and neither is the effect that produced it. It is one of the very few wall fittings that treats the wall itself as the thing being lit, rather than simply as somewhere convenient to hang a lamp.
Light leaving in both directions is what creates depth on a wall. You get a bright band above and below the fitting with a softer zone in between, rather than the flat circle that a single-direction sconce produces and which flattens everything it touches. In an entrance hall that makes the wall itself part of the lighting scheme, and beside a bed it gives you something to read by without lighting the whole room or disturbing anyone else in it.
