Reading in Bed Without Waking Anyone: A Directional Lighting Guide
The usual solution to reading in bed beside a sleeping partner is to make the light dimmer, and it usually does not work. A dim light spread across the whole room is still light across the whole room, and you end up squinting at the page while they lie there wide awake. The problem is not brightness. It is direction.
The principle: a small pool, not a low glow
A good bedside reading light delivers a defined pool of light roughly the size of an open book and almost nothing beyond it. Done properly, the page is comfortably bright at 300 to 450 lumens while the other side of the bed stays dark enough to sleep.
Three things create that pool: an adjustable head you can angle steeply downward, a shade that is closed on the sides so light does not leak sideways, and a position close enough to the page that the beam has not spread out by the time it lands.
Aim first, dim second
Get the aim right and you will need less dimming than you expect. Point the head down at roughly 45 degrees onto the page rather than forward into the room. A light that shines forward will reach the opposite wall, bounce, and fill the room with exactly the soft ambient glow you were trying to avoid.
Position the light slightly behind your shoulder rather than in front of you. Light coming over the shoulder falls onto the page without putting the source anywhere near your eyeline, and it does not cast the shadow of your own hand across the text.
Wall mounted or table lamp?
A wall light with a pivoting head is usually the better tool. It sits above the clutter of the nightstand, it can be aimed precisely, and it frees the surface. An adjustable table lamp is the better choice if you cannot fix anything to the wall, or if you want to move the light around.

Colour temperature: warm, and warmer than you think
Use 2200 to 2700 kelvin at the bedside. Cool white light of 4000 kelvin and above suppresses melatonin, which is useful at a desk in the morning and counterproductive at eleven at night.
Warm light is also less disturbing to someone half asleep. A cool white beam leaking round the edge of a shade reads as daylight; the same amount of warm light reads as a candle.
Brightness: less than a room light, more than a night light
Around 300 to 450 lumens delivered to the page is right for comfortable reading. Below about 200 you will notice eye strain on a long session. Above about 600 you are lighting the room rather than the book, and the spill becomes the problem.
Remember that the lumen figure on the box is the total output of the bulb in all directions. A well designed reading light with a closed shade delivers most of it onto the page, so a lower rated fixture with good optics beats a brighter one with an open shade. Small details that make the difference
Put the switch where your hand already is. A switch on the fixture body, reachable without sitting up, is worth more than any specification. Fumbling for a wall switch at the end of a chapter is how a good reading light ends up unused.
Check the shade from your partner's side of the bed, lying down. That is the only view that matters for the question you are trying to solve, and it will tell you immediately whether the fixture leaks.
If you read on a tablet or an e reader, you still want a small amount of ambient light rather than reading a bright screen in total darkness. A very low warm light aimed away from the screen is easier on the eyes than none at all.
