  • Battery Wall Lights: How Long They Last and Where They Belong

    Battery wall lights used to be a last resort, the thing you bought when the wall you wanted to light had no wiring and no socket. That is no longer true. Rechargeable LED fixtures have become good enough that plenty of people choose them over a hardwired light on purpose. But they suit some jobs far better than others, and the difference comes down to how you actually use the light.

    What a runtime figure actually means

    Almost every battery light quotes a runtime, and the number is nearly always measured at the lowest brightness setting on a fresh battery at room temperature. That is not dishonest, it is just the standard way the figure is produced, and it means the real world number is lower.

    A useful rule of thumb: expect roughly half to two thirds of the quoted runtime at a brightness you would actually want to read by, and less again in a cold room, because lithium cells lose capacity below about 10 degrees.

    The number that matters more than runtime is how often you will be charging. A light quoted at 20 hours used for 30 minutes a night in a hallway needs charging roughly monthly. The same light used for four hours an evening beside a reading chair needs charging twice a week, which quickly becomes a chore.

    Where battery lights are genuinely better

    The pattern is short bursts and awkward walls. Hallways, landings, cloakrooms, understairs cupboards, wardrobes and the wall behind a bed in a rented flat are all places where a battery fixture outperforms the alternative, because the alternative is either a trailing cable or no light at all.

    They are also the only real option on a wall you are not allowed to touch, on a masonry wall you would rather not drill, or in a space you expect to change within a year or two.

    Charging: the thing nobody plans for

    How a light charges determines whether you will live with it happily. There are three arrangements and they are not equal.

    A magnetic or clip bracket lets you lift the fixture off the wall, charge it anywhere and put it back. This is the best arrangement by a wide margin, and it is worth prioritising over almost any other feature.

    A fixed body with a charging port means running a cable to the fixture while it charges, which defeats part of the point. Replaceable batteries avoid charging entirely but hand you a different cost.

    If you buy several battery lights for one home, charge them on a schedule rather than waiting for each to die. A shelf, a multi port charger and one evening a month is far less trouble than reacting to a light that has gone out.

    Brightness expectations

    A battery fixture will not match a mains powered light for output, and it does not need to. Most sit between 100 and 400 lumens, which is ample for a hallway, a wardrobe or a soft layer beside a bed, and not enough to be the only light in a living room.

    Judge a battery light on whether it makes a dark corner usable rather than on whether it could light a whole room. Held to the right standard, it usually wins.

    They do not have to stay on the wall

    The quiet advantage of a removable battery fixture is that it is also a portable lamp. Lift it off the bracket and it goes to the dinner table, onto a terrace on a summer evening, or into a room where the bulb has just gone. Nordic evenings are long and blue rather than dark, and a light you can carry outdoors earns its place twice.

    When to choose a plug in instead

    If the light will be on for hours every evening, if it is the main light for a task, or if you need more than about 400 lumens, choose a plug in fixture and accept the cable.     Most mount with a small bracket and two screws. Some use an adhesive plate instead, which suits rented walls, though adhesive holds better on smooth paint than on textured or freshly painted surfaces.

    How often will I need to recharge?

    A hallway light used half an hour a night might last a month. A bedside light used two hours a night will need charging every week or so. Choose a model you can lift off the wall to charge.

    Can I use a battery wall light outdoors?

    Only if it is rated for outdoor use. Many cordless lamps are designed to be carried outside for an evening, but a wall fixture intended for indoor use should not be left out in the weather.
